Viewers name their most anticipated TV series this winter as experts warn to check broadband is up to speed

A new survey has revealed which new release films and TV shows the nation is most excited to stream this winter. And with news that it caused Netflix outages, it’s no surprise that Stranger Things Season 5 took the top spot as the most anticipated release of the season.

The research from Go.Compare Broadband revealed that more than one in five Brits (21%) chose Stranger Things as their must-watch series, followed by Bridgerton Season 4 (14%) and Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 (14%).* Big hitters like Frankenstein, Emily in Paris, Fallout and Knives Out also made the list, showing the UK is gearing up for a serious season of sofa time.

But are our home broadband speeds actually up to the job?

According to Ofcom’s Online Nation 2024 report, the average UK adult spent 4 hours and 30 minutes a day watching video content at home.

Go.Compare's Broadband expert Catherine Hiley warns that a winter full of blockbuster TV could leave households battling slow speeds, buffering and family arguments if their broadband package isn't up to scratch.

Catherine said: “Many of the shows people are most excited about are big, high definition releases that need stable and fast broadband. If your connection struggles with HD streaming or connecting multiple devices at once, you might find the final season of Stranger Things is more stop-start than blockbuster.

“With colder and wetter weather, more of us stay indoors and turn to our TVs. As our data shows, not everyone is excited about the same shows either. So if you’ve got multiple devices streaming at the same time, your broadband could struggle to keep up.

“Before volume 2 of Stranger Things arrives in the UK on 26 December, take a minute to check whether or not your broadband is fast enough for your household. We have a simple tool to help you work out what broadband speed you need for your streaming needs. And if your current package isn’t up to speed, it could be time to think about switching.”

About Go.Compare

Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.

Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
