Tom Banks, car insurance spokesperson for Go.Compare said of the findings: “It’s fascinating to see the regional spread of claims across the UK, and how major infrastructure like the M1, M5, and M6 may influence this. These are some of the busiest arteries of UK road traffic and run through many of the top regions for claims.

“There are plenty of smart ways to make sure you are saving money where you can on your car insurance. From limiting mileage to choosing the right policy add-ons, a few simple steps can make a big difference. Comparing quotes is one of the best ways to find a great deal for your needs. Here are six quick tips on how to save money:

  1. Limit Mileage: Fewer miles often mean lower risk to insurers and in turn, lower premiums. But make sure you are honest with your insurer about how far you drive in a year – if you don’t know how far you drive in a year, look at your last two MOT’s. They have your mileage on and can help you work out your annual average.
  2. Pay Annually: Our latest data shows that motorists end up paying 57% more for their car insurance when they pay monthly instead of annually, so if you can, pay for your premium all in one go.**
  3. Boost Security: Fitting approved alarms or immobilisers could lower your cost.
  4. Time when you buy: Purchasing your car insurance policy 26 days before the renewal date is a great way to save money – you could end up paying 30% more if you leave it till the same day.***
  5. Shop around: Use comparison sites such as Go.Compare to make sure you’re getting the best deal for your needs.
  6. Only Pay for What You Need: Avoid unnecessary add-ons and choose the right level of cover.”
