Over 10 million Brits set to shop for phone deals and slash bills this Black Friday
Young adults (18–34s) are leading the Black Friday tech rush
New research reveals Britain is heading for a Black Friday tech boom, with younger shoppers leading the charge and millions planning to ditch their high-cost mobile contracts in favour of cheaper deals.*
A national survey by Go.Compare Mobile found that tech is the runaway winner this Black Friday:
- More than four in five (81%) 18–34-year-olds surveyed say they’ll be shopping for tech or tech-related deals, from smartphones and SIM-only plans to broadband and smart gadgets.**
- Men are significantly more likely to splash out than women (62% vs 48%), making them the most eager tech bargain-hunters.
But this year’s sales aren't just about splurging, they’re about slashing bills.
The comparison site’s research shows that one in five (20%) Brits plan to use Black Friday to switch their mobile phone contract. That’s the equivalent of almost 11 million adults hunting for cheaper tariffs, bigger data allowances or better network coverage while prices are at their lowest.***
And younger shoppers are driving the shift, with under-35s the most likely to chase tech, broadband and mobile contract deals.
With the cost-of-living squeeze still hitting household budgets, many shoppers see Black Friday as the perfect time to cut essential monthly costs. Go.Compare says shoppers shouldn’t fall for “24-hour deal” hype; switching your phone or broadband contract could save you way more than buying more tech.
Nathan Blackler, expert at Go.Compare mobile and broadband, said: “Black Friday isn’t just bargain chaos - it’s become one of the best weeks of the year to cut your monthly bills. If you’re out of contract or paying over the odds for your phone or broadband, the savings right now could be huge.”
He added: “Before you click ‘buy now’, compare what’s out there. A two-minute check could save you money over the next year and some of the most hyped deals aren’t actually the cheapest. It’s also worth thinking about the tech you really need – even the best deals on the newest phones might not be a saving for you in the long run.”
Nathan’s top tips for bagging the best Black Friday mobile & broadband deals:
- “Check if you’re out of contract: If your broadband contract has ended, you’re probably not getting the best deal – and could be overpaying for your WiFi! Take a look at your deal and if you’re out of contract, Black Friday is the perfect opportunity to bag yourself a broadband bargain.
- “Compare before you click: Don’t trust the “one day only” banners, savvy shoppers will have seen that Black Friday deals have been on the market for a few weeks now so while you should act fast, you can take your time.
- “Don’t pay for data you never use: While unlimited data might sound great, if you are only using 5GB a month, you could end up overpaying. Check your usage, then switch to a plan that suits your habits.
- “Consider SIM-only: If you’ve finished paying off your handset and don’t want an upgrade, you can still save money by looking for a SIM-only contract.
- “Look for broadband speed upgrades: Providers often offer faster speeds for less during Black Friday – so if you’re someone who needs a speedy broadband deal then it’s the perfect time to get yourself a bargain.”

About Go.Compare
Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.
It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.
When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.
Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.
Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
