Car insurance and jobs

New data reveals the surprising cars most popular for different professions

Farmers ditch 4x4s for the VW Golf, while doctors are most likely to drive a Toyota Yaris

When it comes to our jobs and the cars we drive, there are some common stereotypes - whether it’s estate agents driving flashy BMWs, or farmers in a muddy Land Rover. However, new data from Go.Compare car insurance has revealed the most popular cars for different professions - and there are a few surprises.

Though we might picture builders in a van, it turns out that you’re likely to see them driving a trusty Ford Focus. And instead of a classy Mercedes or Audi, doctors these days are more taken by a Toyota Yaris.

The data has revealed that affordable, economic models like the Ford Fiesta are popular across the board - with hairdressers, accountants and bank staff all more likely to drive a Fiesta than any other car.

Tom Banks, Go.Compare car insurance spokesperson, said: “While we might associate certain cars with different jobs, our latest data really shows that regardless of profession, it’s the reliable, economic models that are coming out on top.

“When it comes to choosing a car, there can be advantages to opting for a less flashy, powerful model - it could cost less to fill up your tank, make repairs, and get you better fuel efficiency.

“Typically, cars with smaller engines cost less to insure too, so if you are in the market for a new motor it could be worth following the data trends rather than the stereotypes - and seeing if a Ford, Volkswagen or Toyota catches your eye.

“However, there are things you can do to lower your insurance premium regardless of the car you drive. For instance, shopping around before your renewal is due can save you a considerable amount of money. You should also think carefully about where you will be parking overnight, and how many miles you drive.”

About Go.Compare

Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.

Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
