Staying safe on snowy roads: Go.Compare offers tips on preparing your car for cold weather
With yellow and amber weather warnings for snow and ice across parts of the UK, motoring experts at Go.Compare are reminding Brits to take extra care as they take to the roads this weekend.
The comparison site is urging drivers to prepare their vehicles for the colder conditions, as a recent survey found that 39% of drivers have no plans to ready their cars for winter weather.*
Less than half (44%) of those questioned said that they either have or will be doing some vehicle checks ahead of winter. Of those who said they will be prepping their car, 70% said they’ll make sure their tyres are in good condition, 52% will be checking their wiper blades and a further 48% said they will be reviewing their oil levels.
Tom Banks, Go.Compare car insurance spokesperson, commented: “With extensive snow and ice forecast for most of the UK, it can be an exciting but also hazardous time for those travelling. For those out driving this weekend, it’s important to prepare your car properly. Check that your tyres, windscreen wipers, bulbs and oil levels are all in good condition, and take a few minutes to make sure you know how to use your fog lights and full beams.
“We know that for many in the UK driving in snowy weather is a rare occurrence, so at Go.Compare we have put together a guide to driving in winter weather with helpful tips and reminders including:
- If there’s ice and snow around, make sure you clear your car’s windows, mirrors, number plate and lights of ice or snow before setting off – and remember it’s illegal to drive with snow on top of your car.
- Buy some antifreeze to keep in the car, just in case there is a bout of snow and ice while you have parked up. This means you can clear your windscreens quickly and easily.
- Be careful not to use warm or boiling water to defrost your car’s windscreen as this can cause it to crack, particularly if it already has a chip or crack in it.
- Give yourself extra time on your journey if you can.
- Don’t leave your car unattended and unlocked with the engine running while demisting it, as this could invalidate your insurance if it is stolen.
- Organise an emergency kit to keep in your car. Things such as a blanket, water and some long-life snacks, and even a small spade, will come in handy should you get stuck in your car in cold weather.”
