Car repair MOT

Renewing your car’s MOT? Be sure to take advantage of this new hack

Drivers can now get real-time MOT results sent straight to their phone thanks to a new feature available through the free app from Go.Compare called Renewal. The addition means that drivers won’t need to wait for a call from the garage to get their results, giving greater peace of mind and a simpler, more convenient experience for renewing MOTs.

Renewal is a personal finance app allowing users to stay on top of their insurance details, MOT status and other helpful reminders such as when their boiler service is due, all in one place, providing easy access to key information that can otherwise be lost or forgotten about.

The app will quickly inform users of the outcome of the test and the advisories that were raised by the garage, providing a useful overview of their vehicle’s performance. Renewal says that the additions will give drivers more control over their MOT by helping them make savvier and more-informed decisions.

Matt Sanders, money spokesperson at Go.Compare, said: “This new feature gives drivers more control over their MOT, as you will know your results before the test centre calls. You can use this information to get quotes for the repairs from other garages before picking up your car. This way, when the test centre gives you a price for the repairs, you’ll know whether they’re offering you a good deal or if you’d be better off trying another garage.”

In addition to this, Renewal also now allows drivers to view their or any other vehicle’s MOT and mileage history by entering its registration number. This will include details on advisories from past tests, which could help drivers spot recurring faults or avoid buying unreliable second-hand vehicles.

These additions join Renewal’s existing toolbox of MOT features, which includes automated reminders of when a vehicle’s MOT is due. Previous research by Renewal revealed that more than one in seven drivers (15%) have once forgotten to book an MOT until after it had expired,* highlighting that the app could prevent motorists from making costly motoring errors.

Matt Sanders added: “Knowing that you’ll be able to get your MOT results sent straight to your phone is going to be hugely convenient for motorists, especially for those who have to leave the test centre while the MOT is taking place.

“And the addition of our new MOT history checker could also be a huge help for consumers, as it could prevent them from buying a car that isn’t fully safe or reliable, possibly a very expensive mistake. All these new features epitomise what Go.Compare and Renewal are about - giving consumers more information so they can have more control and make better decisions.”

About Go.Compare

Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.

Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
