New data reveals surprising cars that are the UK’s cheapest to insure

Including classic models and sports cars, with cover for the cheapest car costing just £83 on average

In a shock result, new data has revealed that the cheapest car to insure in the UK is the MGB, a classic sports car. Despite having been out of production for more than 30 years, the retro motor has topped the list as the cheapest vehicle to insure, with an average car insurance policy costing just £83, according to Go.Compare car insurance.*

This news comes as the comparison site also revealed that car insurance costs have increased, with the UK average now sitting at £403.** However, the comparison experts have also found that choosing certain cars could mean you pay a lot less.

Go.Compare car insurance analysed internal sales figures to find out which vehicles had the highest - and lowest - average premiums. And while smaller cars are generally the most budget-friendly to insure, the data revealed that the classic MGB is the only vehicle with an average premium below £100.

The MGB was followed by the Rover Mini, which costs just £116 to insure on average, while the BMW Z3 came in as the third cheapest at £152 per year. The MG TF (£155) and Toyota MR2 (£172) completed the top five MG and Peugeot both have two models in the top 10 cheapest to insure, indicating these makes could be a good choice for anyone looking to keep costs down.

Tom Banks, Go.Compare car insurance spokesperson, explains why this could be the case: “Some models cost more to insure due to factors like repair costs and risk of theft, so it might seem surprising that the MGB is the cheapest car to insure, but when you scratch beneath the surface, it makes sense. It was MG’s top-selling model, meaning parts are widely available, and owners of these cars tend to be mature motorists who only take them short distances, all of which brings down the average premium.”

The research also revealed the 10 cheapest cars for drivers aged under 25 to insure. Young drivers typically pay much more for car insurance, due to insurers perceiving them as higher risk, so cutting insurance costs could be even more important.

For under 25s, the Volkswagen Fox came out on top, costing an average of £529 to insure.** This is marginally less than the SEAT Mii, at £533. The Fiat 500 comes in third at £542 per year, while the Skoda Citigo (£543) and the MINI One (£554) complete the top five.

Tom continued: “Everyone’s insurance quote is different, because it depends on many factors, such as where you live, where you park the car overnight and how many miles you drive. The car model is another one of these factors, and it can really influence how much you pay, so we’d always recommend checking insurance costs for a particular model before you commit to a purchase. Comparing policies ahead of time will give you a good idea of the costs, so that you’re not left with a vehicle that will exceed your budget.”

About Go.Compare

Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.

Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
