Go.Compare comments on the iPhone 17 launch
9 September 2025 - The latest iPhone has just been unveiled, with Apple revealing the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the new ultra-thin iPhone Air - Go.Compare has some tips and tricks to help customers get the best deal on a new handset.*
The new iPhone range brings some noticeable upgrades for Apple fans. All four models feature 120Hz ProMotion display and a base storage of 256GB, with the standard iPhone 17 coming with an improved selfie camera and a bigger battery. Meanwhile, Apple’s thinnest ever model, the iPhone Air, is even slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, measuring just 5.6mm thick.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max both come kitted out with a triple 48 MP rear camera and the Pro Max boasts the largest battery yet. But before you rush to pre-order the latest iPhone, we’ve got some advice to help you get the phone you want without breaking the bank.
Gadget expert at Go.Compare Mobile, Catherine Hiley, says of the new range: “Apple’s latest release will be sure to grab the headlines, and for many people, the iPhone 17’s new features will be really attractive. But before you head straight out and bag the latest iPhone, here’s how to make sure you’re getting good value for money.
“Unless you spot any spectacular pre-order offers, it’s a good idea to wait a few weeks, as we’d expect to see some more competitive deals coming through once some of the hype has died down. And if you’re prepared to hold fire for a few months, you might be able to get a refurbished iPhone 17, which could save you hundreds of pounds. Or you might be able to find some decent Black Friday iPhone deals.
“With this latest range starting at £799, and prices increasing from there, it’s a good idea to look at older models to see if they’ll meet your needs without quite such a hefty price tag. When choosing a phone, whether you’re considering the latest models or not, you should think carefully about what you really need from a phone.
“The newest device isn’t always the best fit, especially if you’re not likely to use the latest features every day. You could save a lot of money by choosing a handset that’s a year or two older, or one from another manufacturer that still offers what you need at a more affordable price.
“One of the biggest upgrades between the iPhone 17 compared to the iPhone 16, is the addition of the ProMotion display, making for a smoother and more responsive experience. So if you’re a big gamer, then it might be worth it. But if you just use your phone for scrolling on social media, replying to messages and making the odd video call, last year’s iPhone will be more than sufficient. In short, our advice is simple - take your time, compare the deals and consider what model is right for your needs.”
When choosing a phone contract, there is more to think about than just the model, as Catherine explains:
“You also need to consider how much data you need. While unlimited data sounds like a great idea, it’s almost always the priciest option and the vast majority of users simply don’t need it. Check your current network usage to see how much data you get through each month before signing up for your new contract to ensure you’re not paying for more than you’ll use.”
If you do decide to go for the new iPhone 17, it’s a good idea to get insurance for your brand-new handset. Here Catherine says: “You can get gadget insurance for a brand new phone from any gadget insurer, you don’t have to get it from Apple or from the retailer you bought it from.
“You could save yourself a few pounds by shopping around for your mobile phone insurance and getting it separately from your contract. You can compare gadget insurance policies online and via insurance comparison sites.”

About Go.Compare
Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.
It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.
When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.
Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.
Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
