Bonfire fright: pet experts reveal how to stop firework stress

Taking steps before bonfire night can help keep pets calm

With bonfire night on the horizon, the experts at Go.Compare pet insurance are advising pet owners to plan ahead in order to help our furry friends stay calm. Being proactive by implementing routine changes, distraction techniques and even calming medication in advance can make a huge difference, they advise.

The PDSA found that 41% of dog owners and 30% of cat owners suspect their pets were frightened of the bangs and flashes on bonfire night* - and the true number may be higher, as it isn’t always easy to spot signs of fear and anxiety in our pets. So, with fireworks causing stress and upset to so many pets, it’s important we take steps to reduce their anxiety as November 5th approaches.

Rhys Jones, pet insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: “While fireworks night - and the days around it - are a time of celebration for many, they can also be nerve-wracking for our pets. As well as causing them anxiety, some pets may even suffer accidents and injuries due to fireworks, as they try to escape away from the perceived danger.

“Fortunately, there’s a lot we can do as pet owners to limit the risks and keep pets calm. If you suspect your pooch might be frightened by the festivities, then we suggest changing up their daily routine in advance - for instance, by getting them used to earlier walks, while it’s still light outside. Also, keep cats and dogs inside in a comfortable spot each evening to shelter them from bright lights and noise.

“If your pet exhibits extreme anxiety, we do recommend speaking to your vet, as they may be able to prescribe calming medication to ease the symptoms. Your vet can also advise you about the various pet anxiety products on the market - such as plug-in diffusers and sprays - to help you judge which are safe and suitable for your pet.

“If your vet does prescribe any treatments or medications, it’s worth noting that these could be covered by your pet insurance - so it’s worth consulting with your provider about this if you’d like to make a claim.

“We also have some tips on how to keep cats and dogs calm on fireworks night itself:

  • Block out the noise - closing windows, doors, and shutting curtains can have a significant impact on how much noise reaches your pet’s ears. You could also try providing them with a blanket-covered crate or safe place.
  • Keep them in - make sure pets are safely inside by 4pm, before it gets dark. If they need night-time toilet breaks, go outside with them and try to keep them on a lead or harness if possible.
  • Provide distractions - offer treats and toys to give your pet something to focus on besides the fireworks.
  • Give space if they need it - some pets might respond to their stress by wanting a cuddle, while others may prefer to be left alone - so make sure they have a safe space to retreat to.
  • Consider calming products - there are lots of items on the market that can help ease your pet’s anxiety, like sprays, tablets, collars and diffusers. Consult with your vet to help you judge which are the safest and best for your pet.”

About Go.Compare

Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.

Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.
