Bonfire fright: almost half of pet owners support a change in rules on firework sales
New research reveals the devastating effects of fireworks on pets, with a quarter left terrified
As Bonfire Night approaches, new research from Go.Compare Pet Insurance has revealed that fireworks season is no fun for Britain’s pets – or their owners.
In a survey of 1,173 UK adults who own a pet, a quarter (25%) of pet owners say their animals are terrified by fireworks.* More than one in five (22%) say they cannot let their pet outside because of the risk that they will get scared and run away.
The findings highlight just how stressful the season can be, with many owners planning to change their routines or stay home to comfort their pets.
When asked how they felt about fireworks in regards to their pets, one-third (32%) of respondents say there should be stricter rules when it comes to firework sales, while almost one in five (17%) believe they should be made illegal.
Just 13% say they have no issue with fireworks in regard to their pets, and 24% say their pets do not seem to mind the fireworks.
Rhys Jones, pet insurance spokesperson at Go.Compare, said: “Bonfire Night can be terrifying for pets; the loud bangs, flashes and smells can trigger stress, shaking, or even panic. We see pet owners every year having to deal with frightened animals, damaged furniture and even vet visits caused by firework fear.”
He added: “If you’re planning celebrations, try to be mindful of your neighbours and their pets. And if you’re a pet owner, a little preparation goes a long way – from creating a safe space indoors to making sure your pet’s microchip and insurance details are up to date, just in case they bolt.”
Go.Compare has provided some tips to help keep pets calm during fireworks:
- Create a safe space: Give your pet a quiet, dark area away from windows with their favourite bed, blanket, or toy where they can retreat and feel protected. You can also use pheromone diffusers or calming sprays to make the space more comforting.
- Close windows and curtains: Soothing background noise, whether it’s the TV, a playlist, or some gentle classical music from the radio, can help mask the sound of fireworks and keep pets relaxed.
- This year, Go.Compare is proud to sponsor Classic FM’s Pet Classics, two special programmes created to help the nation’s animals stay calm during fireworks season.
- Dan Walker, presenter of the programme, said: “We know that fireworks can be a problem for pets and animals, so we created Pet Classics to provide the perfect sanctuary for them. I’m looking forward to hearing from all our dedicated fans and any first-timers too. Everyone is welcome!”
- Play familiar or calming sounds: TV, classical music or a white noise machine can help mask sudden bangs.
- Stay calm yourself: Pets can pick up on anxiety, so act normal, stay composed, and offer gentle reassurance rather than overreacting to their fear.
- Keep cats and small pets indoors: Bring them in before dark and secure doors, windows, and cat flaps. For rabbits or guinea pigs in outdoor hutches, cover the enclosure with thick blankets, leaving ventilation gaps to muffle the noise.
- Walk dogs before dark: Take your dog out early and keep them on a lead, even in fenced areas, to prevent them from bolting if startled.
- Check microchip details and insurance: Make sure your pet’s ID tag, microchip information, and insurance policy are all up to date - just in case your pet runs off or injures themselves while scared.
With Bonfire Night, Diwali and New Year celebrations all packed into the same season, Go.Compare’s research suggests growing public concern about unregulated fireworks use – not only for animal welfare but also for safety and noise disturbance.
Rhys added: “It’s clear that Brits love fireworks, but we’re also increasingly aware of the impact they have on animals and the community. A bit of consideration and preparation can keep both pets and people safe – and make Bonfire Night more enjoyable for everyone.”
This year, Go.Compare is also sponsoring Classic FM’s Pet Classics programmes which provide an audio sanctuary for the nation’s animals. These will be broadcast on Wednesday 5 November, 5pm to 9pm, hosted by Dan Walker, with a second programme on Saturday 8 November, 5pm to 9pm, hosted by Charlotte Hawkins.

About Go.Compare
Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.
It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.
When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.
Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.
