Bella of the ball: the UK’s favourite dog and cat names for 2024 revealed
Luna remains the most popular cat name, while Bella steals back the top spot for dogs
Brits’ favourite dog and cat names for 2024 have just been unveiled by Go.Compare pet insurance* - with Bella taking back the title as the number one name for dogs, and the third-most popular name for cats.
Dog | Cat | |
1 | Bella | Luna |
2 | Luna (↓1) | Milo |
3 | Teddy | Bella |
4 | Milo | Simba |
5 | Poppy (↑1) | Coco (↑1) |
6 | Lola (↓1) | Leo (↑2) |
7 | Buddy (↓1) | Loki |
8 | Daisy | Willow (new entry) |
9 | Bailey (↑1) | Charlie (new entry) |
10 | Charlie (↓1) | Lola (new entry) |
Luna and Bella have consistently been the most popular dog names for several years, with Bella maintaining the top spot for three years before Luna became the most popular dog name in 2023.** Now though, Bella is back to being the nation’s favourite. Other top name choices for dogs include Teddy, Milo, Poppy and Lola.
This year’s data reveals that pet owners in the UK know what they like with no new entries - all of this year’s most popular names were also top picks in 2023.
The same can be said for cat owners, who showed once again that they love the name Luna the most - for the fourth year running. Milo, Bella and Simba are also popular name choices for cats, while the names Willow, Charlie and Lola have all risen in popularity this year, as new entries in the top ten.
Rhys Jones, pet insurance spokesperson at Go.Compare, said: “While UK pet owners choose a wide and wonderful array of names for their pets, it’s interesting to see that the top names remain popular year after year - with Bella, Luna and Milo all among the top five names for both cats and dogs."
While there were no new entries to the top ten most popular dog names, Rhys added some predictions for names we could see rise in popularity in the year ahead: “We often see films, TV and major events affecting the name rankings - for instance with Simba and Loki featuring as top cat names. This year, with a Lilo and Stitch live-action film on the cards, we could see Lilo climb the name rankings. We could also see the ongoing Wicked movie hype influencing people’s decisions, with cats or dogs named Glinda, Elphaba or Elfie.
“Choosing the right name for your four-legged friend can take some time, and so can choosing the right insurance - but both are important. So, as soon as your new pet is settled, we recommend getting the right protection in place. Using a comparison site can help speed up the process, as well as making sure you get the right policy at the best available price.”

About Go.Compare
Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.
It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.
When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.
Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.
Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
