A quarter of Brits admit to letting their home insurance renew automatically
One in four homeowners auto-renew their home insurance without shopping around for better quotes
New research from comparison experts Go.Compare has found that a quarter of Brits surveyed admit they let their home insurance roll over without reviewing it.
Of the 25% of people who auto-renew, 17% admit they do it without looking at the other deals available and a further 8% even said they forget to shop around until after the auto-renewal has already gone through and it's too late.*
Men are more likely than women to let their home insurance policy renew automatically without shopping around for deals (28% of men compared to 21% of women) and those aged between 25 and 34 are the most likely to let it auto-renew with 35% saying they do so.
The survey, which asked 2,000 Brits about their home insurance, also found that while some are losing out on savings, almost a third (29%) shop around for home insurance well in advance of the renewal date in a bid to try and get the best savings and a further quarter (24%) wait until their renewal is due before shopping around, switching providers if it will save them money.
Nathan Blackler, expert at Go.Compare Home insurance said: “Home insurance is just one of many policies and contracts the average homeowner juggles at any given time. So it’s easy to see why letting a policy automatically renew for another 12 months feels like the simplest option.
“It’s also easy to assume your cover needs will have stayed much the same over the past year, especially if there’s been little or no change to your home or household in that time, but this isn’t always the case. When it’s time to renew think about any work you have had done to your home, and the value of the property. And the levels of cover you need for your contents – we’ve got a handy contents insurance calculator to help you work out how much cover you need.
“It’s always worth comparing policies to see if you can get a better deal and checking whether your needs have changed. Some policies offer extras like legal cover, home emergency assistance, or accidental damage protection at no extra cost too.”

About Go.Compare
Go.Compare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.
It does not charge people to use its services and does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. Go.Compare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.
When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. It is this approach to comparing products that secured the company an invitation to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) in 2008, and it is still the only comparison site to be a member of this organisation.
Go.Compare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest and works with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.
Go.Compare is part of Future Plc and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
